Less than six months after its grand opening, one of the biggest restaurants in Verona has closed.
Megan's of Verona, a homegrown project of seven-year resident Roger McMunn, was plagued by inconsistencies from the start and could not sustain the crowds it was designed to generate.
McMunn's business plan was to offer inexpensive food and a family atmosphere and use a large, mostly younger staff to accommodate the volume the 6,250-square-foot building was capable of. His vision, formed through numerous conversations with fellow Veronans, was to make weekend brunches the key and become a gathering place for young and old throughout the week.
The family atmosphere was apparent to anyone who visited frequently - his wife and kids all worked there, other relatives helped from time to time and one of the rooms was even designed as a large kids' playroom. But too often busy days and nights didn't go as planned, and this spring another restaurant just blocks away cut into its niche by offering weekend breakfast buffets, too.
McMunn was unavailable for comment.
The building, which at one point was considered for a Pizza Hut Italian Bistro, continues to be owned by Pizza Hut of Southern Wisconsin, and though rumors of a potential replacement tenant have already been heard, no announcements have been made.
