Fishing tips and tricks About 30 adults showed up for Craig Amacker of Fontana Sports' presentation, "Catching Fish on the Fly," last Tuesday night as part of the Verona Public Library's adult summer programs. Amacker gave information on where fish hide in a stream and went over some of the best places to fish in Wisconsin year round.


Small ball leads to big win
A.J. Stoffels singles in the 10th inning to bring home Matt Niffenegger for the go-ahead run in a 6-2 victory over host McFarland last Sunday. Verona added three more runs after his RBI to put the game out of reach for the Spartans.

Fielding a team comprised of an HTL who’s who list of top tier hitters, actually it was the Cavaliers ability to adapt that eventually led to the two-time defending champions 6-2 victory at McFarland.

Noah Kachelski knew he wanted to play college football, but the Madison Edgewood student-athlete and Verona area resident had a few choices to consider in the process. That is when the Division III University of Dubuque defensive coach and lead recruiter Lance Taylor steps in. The Verona resident came to visit Kachelski, knowing his potential from the start.

Verona scores 25 runs in first playoff game
The Verona Home Talent baseball team continued their run at a third straight Western Section title with a 25-5 offensive explosion against Ridgeway on Sunday.

With the wind gusting at around 25 miles per hour, Derek Burgenske took the first pitch and lined a solo home run over the right field wall.

Perhaps no one on the Verona girls tennis team has had to take their game a notch up like sophomore Kaitlin Hackbarth. Playing at No. 4 singles a year ago, Hackbarth moved up two spots this season after the Wildcats graduated half of their singles lineup.

UPDATE: Verona Senior Little League beats Iowa
After a tough loss to Kentucky (Hazard Perry County Little League), Verona won the second game of the day against Iowa (Johnston Little League) with a 6-5 win. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh, Verona scored three runs to take the lead.

Michael Pleimling then came into pitch in the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded and one out. He struck out the last two batters to seal the win, and Verona is 2-1 in pool play.

UPDATE: Verona loses first game of Central Regional
After a 17-4 opening victory for the Verona Senior Little League team, they had a 6-5 setback against Team Kentucky (Hazard Perry County Little League) in their second game earlier today. Verona was winning 5-2 after five innings, but Kentucky scored three in the sixth on four hits to tie the game.

They took a 6-5 lead in the next inning on a sacrifice fly, but Verona loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, they couldn't get the hit to tie or win the game and fell to 1-1 in pool play.

The Verona Senior Little League team won both the district and the state championship by going 7-0. On Aug. 1, they defeated Lakeland, Wis. 13-2 with the help of three home runs by Louis Ellis, Alex Watzke and a walk off by Michael Pleiming to punch their way to the Central regionals in Columbus, Mo. starting on Aug. 8.

Verona Home Talent falls in Night League playoffs
The Verona Home Talent team's Thursday Night League season came to an end losing 8-2 against a Middleton team (25-3, 13-3 in the Eastern Section of the Sunday League) the Cavaliers may have to play down the road.

Verona Senior Little League headed to Central Regionals
The Verona Senior Little League team won both the district and the state championship by going 7-0. UPDATE: Verona Home Talent advances to Night League playoffs
Monona Home Talent forfeited their game on Tuesday night, and the loss clinched a spot in the Thursday Night League playoffs for Verona.

Verona will play at Middleton tonight at 7:30 in the first round. If they win, they will play next Thursday at the Cottage Grove/Ashton winner. Verona lost 4-3 to Middleton back on May 20 in the first Night League game of the year.
