The second annual Fitchburg Agora Art Fair showcased the work of 70 artists Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Agora Art Fair. The Fair, which also featured live music, food, beer and a fundrasier for the National Kidney Foundation, started at 10 a.m. at the Agora Grounds at 5500 East Cheryl Parkway.

The municipalities represented by the Verona Fire District will be discussing a new district agreement and hope to have it signed in October.

Five people with Verona ties are involved in Four Seasons Theater’s upcoming production of South Pacific. The play opens this weekend starring Tony nominee Tom Wopat as Emile de Becque. It will also feature Verona Area High School graduate Alli Foss as Ensign Nellie Forbush, as well as Steve and Sierra Nibbe. In addition to the four actors from Verona who will be in the Four Seasons Theatre performance of “South Pacific” this weekend, a Verona Area High School student from Fitchburg is part of the ensemble. Most of the work done by the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association is hard to spot from a distance, but to people intimately familiar with the Sugar River and its tributaries, it’s vital.Monitoring water quality and enhancing the habitat for native populations can be dirty work in every sense of the word, often involving waders, chainsaws, canoes and lots of digging along the bottom of a shallow, slow-moving stream. The group was born out of a 1998 effort called the Upper Sugar River Initiative, which provided a federal grant through the Department of Natural Resources to develop stormwater management plans around Verona, Mount Horeb and Belleville, coordinate government efforts and lead volunteers in building trout habitat and erosion control enhancements along the Badger Mill Creek and other parts of the Sugar River.
